The Superpower of Kindness

A mighty workhorse in the background

Be kind.

Such a little word that we tend to overlook it. We relegate it to the back of our minds, forever in the shadow of all the bigger, more important, more impactful words. Kind is too small, to nice sounding, and so overused that it sounds like a cliché.

How hard would it be to perform a kindness today? Chances are it would be no trouble at all. In fact, some of the best acts of kindness are the simplest, smallest of gestures. To some, this is natural state of being, like breathing. They don’t have to think hard on it, it’s not like it’s a conscious thought. They just do it. Other times, you might have to ponder it a moment. We may ask ourselves would it be okay, should I mind my own business, it’s too much trouble. In actuality, what we are doing is second guessing our soul’s desire to make a connection with another human. It’s an energetic exchange that wants to take place, only our ego for whatever reason is throwing a bit of a monkey wrench into the mix. You may go for the moment, or you might let it slide. However, if you let it slide, I guarantee there will be another chance to balance the scales until your soul is satisfied.

Acts of kindness alone don’t change the world immediately, but they do create ripples in energy, easing the load of all it touches. This is a really good practice because both the doer and receiver benefit. Being kind is not stupid or a waste of time. It simply keeps us in touch with humanity.

If you are the type of person who is best friends with kindness, I say good for you! Keep spreading that high energy. Our world needs it! On the flip side, being able to notice who and when a person needs a kindness may be the bigger challenge. And to this I suggest learn to be aware of those around you. Don’t walk through life on autopilot.

We need kindness in our society, especially with the terrible injustices taking place against our Brown community now. We might not be able to change the narrative immediately by ourselves, but we can do our part by spreading the kind energy into the world. It’s no less effective than a full on protest or boycott.

Will you accept a kindness challenge? Do something nice for someone today. For an added challenge, make that someone a stranger. Do it from your heart without any expectations. Give freely. Share your gifts. It will open your heart and make room for other kindnesses destined your way.
